Moreover, Laura is an avid Golfer and have participated at a competitive level since young, and has secured many trophies and titles to her name. Earlier this month, she defended her title and once again won the Bolton Ladies’ Championship again on her home turf! We even managed to grab a quick interview with her!
— Let’s have some background information! Please can you tell us a little bit more about this Golf tournament?
“Lady members from the 11 Golf Clubs in the Bolton area come to play in the Bolton Ladies Championship which is a week long Scratch competition which starts with a 36 hole stroke play qualifier on the Monday. The top 8 players with the best combined gross score go onto play in the match-play stages. The quarter final matches are played Thursday morning. The Semi final matches take place Friday morning and the Final the afternoon. Lots of golf! The week gives you the opportunity to play against the other low handicap players from across Bolton.”
— That is a lot of golf! How did you prepare for it? Did you fit in a lot of practice leading up to it?
“To be honest I didn’t do much practice before the championship this year. I would usually play a full month beforehand in various competitions to get myself in competition mode. However, with moving into a new house, work commitments and miserable weather I haven’t played much.”
— Winning, again, with little to no practice before the tournament is no mean feat. Talk us through the qualifiers and main tournament, was it difficult due to having minimal practice?
“The two qualifying rounds were played in awful conditions but I managed to lead by 8 shots going into the matchplay stages!
“I had two great matches in the quarter finals and semi finals winning 3&2 and 5&4. This gave me some confidence going into the final. Knowing I had played well throughout the whole week settled any nerves I had. I can usually feel some pressure when I know 50+ people are watching.
Every match was very different, in terms of how they developed over the 18 holes. All I knew for certain was that I was hitting the ball off the tee and my drives alot better than I expected. Which was a nice surprise after such little preparation.
With the final few holes to play in the final, I was four holes up with four to play. All i had to do was halve the hole with my opposition to win the match. I over shot the green on the 15th and 16th greens with my approach shots which left me in difficult positions to be able to get up and down. (It felt as though I couldn’t control the distance of these shots. I was hitting them alot further than I had anticipated!)”
— Having not practiced Golf itself, to winning, and driving off the tee so much further…Would you say training with CFXIXI has improved your performance in competitive golf?
“With such little prep for the competition I shocked myself on how solid I was hitting the ball all week, I have to say I 100% think that training at XI:XI has improved my strength in being able to hit the ball further and more solid off the tee. This meaning I’m hitting more shots off the fairway and also a little closer to the hole! I have also noticed an improvement in my shots when lying in thicker rough, maybe this is improvement in my forearm/wrist strength!”
— How did it feel upon winning? Must have felt good winning like that!
“It was such a a relief to win after such an intense day of golf and long week. The championship this year was taking place at my home course Bolton Old Links Golf Club, so it was nice win on home turf!
I have been lucky enough to win the championship 3 times, 2010, 2014 and now 2015!”
— This goes to show how much strength and conditioning can improve the intricacies of which ever sport you take part in! We wish Laura all the best for future Golfing tournaments.
